As the IPL 2025 season draws to a close, former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has urged MS Dhoni to consider retiring from the league. At 43, Dhoni’s performance has come under scrutiny, and his continued presence in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squad has raised questions about the team’s transition and future direction.

“Ultimately, it’s Dhoni’s decision. But if I were him, I’d say, ‘Enough.’ I’ve played as much as I wanted and served the franchise well. If the motivation was to ensure a smooth transition, then it’s okay to step aside now. The franchise will evolve—even if it takes another year. You can’t wait forever for the perfect time. It's important to find peace with the idea of moving on.”

Dhoni’s 2025 Season: Below Expectations

Dhoni, who was retained by CSK for ₹4 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, returned as captain after Ruturaj Gaikwad suffered a mid-season injury. However, both his form and CSK’s campaign have been far from ideal.

In 13 matches this season, Dhoni has scored 196 runs at an average of 24.50 and a strike rate of 135.17. Unlike previous seasons where he made impactful cameos in the final overs, this year he has mostly batted lower down the order, even coming in at No. 9 on multiple occasions. This strategy has sparked debate over his current role and effectiveness in the team.

Legacy and the Road Ahead

Despite the current dip in form, Dhoni remains one of IPL’s most iconic figures, having led CSK to five championship titles. His leadership and legacy are undisputed, but as age catches up and his power-hitting wanes, speculation about retirement has intensified.

Dhoni has previously said,

“Once this IPL ends, I’ll take 6-8 months to assess if my body can handle the demands again,” hinting at uncertainty regarding his participation in IPL 2026.

While fans may hope for one more season with their beloved "Thala," Bangar’s comments add to the growing sentiment that it may be time for Dhoni to step away and allow the franchise to build for the future.
